Even Strava's Heatmap was sketchy … so I described it in the "fixme" tag.įWIW, used Android phones are cheap. For example, the Preston Ponds Trail receives little traffic, so I had a difficult time locating GPS tracks for it. When I only had sketchy data to draw a trail, I often mentioned it in a "note" or "fixme" tag. Basically, if it was based on the Heatmap, confidence level is high that it represents the trail accurately because it is based on an abundance of recorded data. When I refined a trail using Strava's Heatmap, I indicated it in the trail's "source" tag. You can inspect any trail in OSM and list its "tags" to learn more about its characteristics. Several months ago I refined many of them using Strava's Heatmap which, for popular trails, represents dozens of tracks per trail. Most of the trails you see are based on at least 2+ tracks and often many more. The odds of coming across a map built from OSM are high and that's why I chose it for mapping the High Peaks region (as opposed to Google Maps … which has restrictive licensing terms and eventually shut down crowd-sourcing due to vandalism). Many maps are *derived* from OpenStreetMap (OSM) including Caltopo's Mapbuilder Topo, Gaia's Topo map, GmapTool's map for Garmin devices, Suunto's Movescount map, Thunder Forest's Outdoors map, and many more. I mapped 95% of the High Peaks infrastructure in OpenStreetMap (hiking trails, ski trails, guideposts, trail-registers, fords, footbridges, waterfalls, viewpoints, ladders, staircases, lean-tos, designated campsites, privies, parking areas, geographic features, etc). You didn't exactly stumble across 'a more detailed version of my tracks'. The work is done by trail-adopters who volunteer their time. They're maintained just enough to keep people from developing new routes to the summit … and no more than that. No, they do receive maintenance but less than marked trails. Anyway, free Garmin-compatible maps for the northeast as available from the same source as 5 years ago. Most of the format was reverse-engineered years ago but some features never were (I believe elevation data was left out). It still uses Garmin's proprietary map format (a vector-based map). If you have a Garmin GPS, not much has changed in 5 years.
